MarshalWould anyone know where I can find a detailed account of William Marshal building and/or renovating a castle or castles. Also, any details on his time in the crusades and the castle building techniques he borrowed from that experience.
PeterJust off the top of my head, weren't there several men with that name ?
ie. which period are you aiming at ?
As Sth. Wales was a favourite area of the Marshal family.
MarshalI am refering to the William Marshal who served the kings Henry II, Richard the Lionheart, and John Lackland. He also served as regent for Henry III. A website with general information about him can be found at: http://www.castlewales.com/marshall.html
PeterTo be honest, I don't think you will find answers to those specific questions. So much from that period is not well documented on castle building, in respect of who pinched ideas's from whom. Or in fact, where certain styles started. It would not just be about Marshal, but as much about the Master Mason (s) he employed.
It would be a very involved process to find threads that may lead to answers. I do have a book, English Medieval Architects, down to 1550. Which lists all castle works, and masons known to have worked on them. By tracing each of the Marshall castles and which known architects worked on them, it may be possible to formulate some theories. But that is all they would be, theories.
Have you tried contacting someone like Oxbow Books ? Sure I have seen something in their past lists on Marshal.
The other problem is, much is published in journals, that does not appear to the general public. John Kenyon has published several bibliographies on castle studies in Britain & Ireland. And still publishes them yearly for the Castle Studies Group. These list the many hundreds of small & large (and obscure) castle papers/publications that appear. But even John relies on the good will of many enthusiasts that send him copies of works they buy or find.
I wish you all the best with your search.
My apologies for not being to help further.
MarshalThank you for your reply. I figured it would be difficult to find that information. I was just hoping someone would know of a website or book not listed in the search engines. I am not terribly dissapointed. Historical accuracy isn't too important so theories aren't out of the question.
GeoffThere is an excellent biography by professor David Crouch called "William Marshall" (published in paperback by Longman, 1999). It is fully referenced to sources should you want to research anything yourself.
